Summer Mission Trip to Bastrop
The focus of FUMC’s summer mission trip to Bastrop, Texas (June 10 th – June 15th) was to work with victims of recent devastating fires in the area. A group of 29 people from Huntsville left Sunday, June 10th and arrived at Faith Village (First Baptist Church) in Smithville, our place of lodging. Team members included folks from Huntsville First UMC, Huntsville First PC, and Leona First UMC. We were joined by six or seven from Brenham First UMC and one from Thorndale UMC, and later by 2 or 3 others. Team members worked primarily on two homes to complete trim, finish, and painting, tile work, and plumbing work in both places.

One Great Day of Service
Background: FUMC sponsored its fifth annual One Great Day of Service on Saturday, November 10, 2012. This one day event is designed to help build relationships among church members and to unite church members with the community as they perform service projects on behalf of individuals or local service organizations in or around Huntsville (as well as some with a national or even international focus). This year, a number of the service projects were completed in designated rooms within the FUMC Social Hall, while others were conducted on site at the homes of individuals or local service organizations.

The 2012 projects included:
Sacking 400 pounds of rice and beans for Good Shepherd Mission
Assembling 50 UMCOR cleaning buckets
Sewing school bags for children in third world countries (UMCOR)
Knitting / crocheting prayer shawls
Project for Human Trafficking / Redeemed Ministries
Cleanup and hauling away downed trees for a local woman
Organizing resale shop donations for the SAAFE House
Completing SAAFE House carpentry project
Sorting donations for the Pregnancy Care Center
Landscaping work for the FUMC complex
Painting a fence for a local woman (youth project)
Building a ramp and doing home repair for an individual in Huntsville
Assembling care packages for college students
Assembling care packages for Afghanistan soldiers
Sewing and assembling banners for Journey Through Bethlehem dye shop

Post Event Review
An estimated 109 individuals participated in the 2012 One Great Day of Service, completing 15 projects in total. The increase in participation this year is likely linked to increased publicity. The event was advertised in at least two Newsletters, via a video during one Sunday’s services, and through the FUMC website, where, for the first time, individuals were able to sign-up for specific projects in advance.

Summer Mission Trip to Joplin
On the evening of June 8th, Jerry and Alice Ellisor and other members of FUMC (Paul and Anna Harbison, Jim Young, Jim and Ellen Willett) packed barbeque, buns, onions, pickles, water and chips to serve 1,000 people in Joplin for each of three days. (That’s 3,000 BBQ sandwiches!) Then in the early hours of June 9th, Jerry and Alice left Huntsville and headed for Joplin. Once there, they served meals out of the parking lot of Byers Avenue United Methodist Church, and ministered to victims of the recent tornado not only by feeding them, but also by being listening ears to their stories.

Good Shepherd Mission “Community Garden”
A team from FUMC worked to create a community garden on the grounds of Good Shepherd Mission (1005 Avenue F, Huntsville, Texas) to help grow food for the hungry in Huntsville.
