One Great Day of Service

One Great Day of Service is an annual FUMC event where congregation members and other members of our community form teams and “go into the world” and serve our brothers and sisters in Christ. The teams complete service projects on behalf of individuals or local service organizations in or around Huntsville (as well as some projects with a national or international focus).  This event helps build relationships among church members and unite them with the community as well. Projects have included: sacking beans and rice for the local food pantry; carpentry, painting, and repair projects for local individuals and service organizations in need; yard work and debris removal for handicapped and elderly individuals in the community; volunteering time at one of our local non-profit community service organizations; assembling UMCOR cleaning buckets; sewing clothing for children; assembling care packages for various groups in need; and much more.
Christmas in July – Gifts for Seniors
Annually, gifts are given to local nursing home residents during special seasons of the year. Suggested gift items for individual residents are placed on FUMC’s Giving Tree during the season. Once all donated wrapped gifts are returned to FUMC, they are delivered to the nursing home(s).  This year, Missions coordinated a “Christmas in July” gift giving, fellowship, and music event at Creekside.
Human Trafficking Ministry
This new ministry team (a sub-committee of the Missions Committee led by Trish Roberts) is focused on developing plans to address human trafficking, the second largest criminal enterprise in the world. The main emphasis this year will be education and prevention programs for our children and youth, and developing a resource list of speakers on the topic for distribution to church groups and community organizations. For information, contact Trish Roberts at bobbytrish@sbcglobal.net.
La Ruth Gates participated in the Grand Parkway Ride which was organized to support victims of human trafficking. The event was the result of a partnership formed between the Texas Department of Transportation, Zachary-Odebrecht Parkway Builders and the United Methodist Church.  It benefited the YMCA International Services’ Trafficked Persons Assistance Program.  Approximately 1000 cyclists participated on the new section of the Grand Parkway which will soon be open from I45 to Hwy 59.  The contributions from the cyclists will benefit life-saving and life-restoring services to the victims who have been enslaved for the purposes of labor and/or sexual exploitation.  Great job, La Ruth, for supporting such a worthy cause.

Communitiy Service Team Projects
Missions Committee is often made aware of needs to provide “handyman” type assistance for FUMC church members or other individuals or service organizations in our community. Many times these requests are for home repairs, carpentry, maintenance, and cleanup projects. These projects are tackled by a volunteer group of willing and able FUMC members. If you are interested in participating, please contact Paul Harbison at littleh@suddenlink.net.  The number of willing helpers has grown considerably in the last year, and Paul is always looking for more willing team members!
